Canadian Nutrition Society: Understanding Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (FGIDs) in Infants

The Canadian Nutrition Society will be hosting the webinar Understanding Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (FGIDs) in Infants presented by Jose M. Saavedra.

Functional gastrointestinal disorders in infancy and childhood, including colic and constipation are a spectrum of conditions that constitute a large portion of pediatric medical attention and practice. While the pathophysiology and etiology for some of them is today better understood, the exact mechanisms explaining their signs and symptoms remain to be elucidated. The role of the intestinal microbiota and the potential interventions that derive from this understanding are increasingly being described. We will review the spectrum, diagnostic criteria, epidemiology, and approaches to management of these disorders in early life.

Jose M. Saavedra, MD, is Associate Professor of Pediatrics, at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is a pediatrician, gastroenterologist, investigator, educator, and medical and scientific business executive.  Dr. Saavedra carried out ground-breaking work in the area of probiotics in pediatrics, and has an extensive record of publications in nutrition, and in the area of intestinal microbiota, immunity, and preventive nutritional strategies.
